2016 NAWA Show in HSV

20170102_090541The 2016 show for me was disappointing in that my main carving ‘Beauty and the Beast’ did not win any awards.  I did win 1st place with the Civil War Soldier shown below in the rough out category.  My Santa Dog also failed to win any award.   Well we all have our ups and downs.  The HSV show is always a great show and lots of fun!   I had fun doing all the carvings and that is why I carve.   I would love to teach carving someday  and the only reason I even complete is to get people to know my name. I retire in a few years and would love to travel from time to time to teach at new locations.  My wife and I love to travel and see the  country side.20170102_09240420170102_092111 20170102_092032 20170102_090541 20161025_183130

Always Learning more!

Had the opportunity to take a class with Floyd Rhadigan (fantasycaving.com).  He is a fantastic instructor and he creates some of the best caricatures out there.  The class was fun, informative, and  the all the group left with awesome carvings.  Since we started with rough outs I was able to finish two carvings and even paint one of them. I even took two home with me and could not put them down until they were finished also.  I love taking classes at Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers in Townsend, Tn. (woodcarvers.com)  Mac and crew are the best!!!!

Huntsville Alabama Woodcarving Show 2015

First Place for this CocaCola Santa.

First Place for this CocaCola Santa.

We just completed the NAWA (North Alabama Woodcarvers Association) 2015 show.  I entered two Santa Claus carvings this year.   I was very pleased to earn both a First and a Second place in that category. Below are picture of this years entries.    Carving is a lot of fun and when you are lucky enough to win with one of your own carvings that makes it even better!  The show is always the first weekend in November of each year, come and see us next year!

Painting Week – 2015

I love to carver but painting to me is a chore.  So like everyone else I carve all year and have to paint everything all at the same time. Attached are two pictures of the items to paint before and after.  It takes me about a week to get it all done.   Painting is a big part of the overall carving.  You can have one of the best woodcarvings every created but with a poor paint job looks like a beginner.

Wizard of Oz wins First place in HSV Carving Show

I worked on this carving for over 6 months off and on. Was excited to enter it into the Huntsville Wood Carving Show held every year on the first Weekend in November.  This carving was entered into the Fantasy category and I was very pleased to have won First Place.  The Oz characters have always held a special place in my heart as my family would watch it every year.  It was tradition!  Hope you enjoy the memories it brings back to us all!DSC_8043
